Juniper Cod Barrel Knife
A 150-year-old pocket knife with a slide-out mechanism, carved from juniper wood.
Description
The barrel knife gets its name from its distinctive shape: a curved handle that completely conceals the blade inside. It is also known as a cod fisherman’s knife, and legend has it that 19th-century Swedish fishermen carved them aboard their trawlers. From these origins, the knife has retained a radical simplicity: no pivot, no spring, and no clasp.
Its mechanism works like a drawer: the blade rests inside the hollow handle and is held in place by a U-shaped brass strip. To open it, simply press the protruding tab at the base, then pull.
This model is crafted from juniper wood, whose warm hues vary from handle to handle and which retains a subtle natural fragrance. The stainless steel blade requires no special maintenance and is completely resistant to moisture.
