The gardian women

They are an integral part of the Camargue's authentic history, even if their role has only recently been fully recognized in relation to the traditional gardians. For a long time, this was an almost exclusively male profession. Yet as early as the beginning of the XXᵉ century, some local women were already riding horses and taking part in the work of the manades, often within their families.

Today, gardianes are fully recognized in Camargue culture. They take part in bullfights, ferrades and many other traditional events, including the famous Feria d'Arles.
