The beautiful history of the Marseilles necklace
The origin of the Marseilles necklace goes back to the 18th century. At that time, the partisans invested the profit of their work in the purchase of gold balls, balls of different sizes. It was a form of saving. The size of the lady's savings could be measured by the length and size of the balls.
This custom was then adopted by the bourgeois families. The little girls of Marseilles received a golden ball on every important occasion (communion, Christmas, birthday) since their birth. When a sufficient number of pearls was gathered, usually on her 16th birthday, a jeweler assembled them and the girl could finally wear her Marseille jewel.
