Description
Dominoes is a board game of ancient Chinese origin (13th century) that arrived in Europe via Italy in the 18th century.
From there, it quickly became popular in France where the word "domino" comes from the similarity between the pieces of the game (white front, black back) and the habit of the Dominican monks (which is white, but can be covered with a black cloak). Playing dominoes became very fashionable in the 19th century. The pieces were made of wood, mother-of-pearl or animal bone. Board games made of precious materials were used as markers of social status. After the First World War, plastic gradually replaced bone and the game became more democratic.
Dominoes are usually played by two, three or four people. As with cards, there are many variations of the game.
