Description
This black bakelite earthed socket is a flush-mounted power socket to the French standard, with the earth pin in the centre, black and glossy like those in houses of the 1930s to 1950s.
Bakelite was the first synthetic plastic, developed by Leo Baekeland between 1907 and 1909: a moulded phenolic resin, insulating, that fitted sockets and switches until the 1950s. The socket is rated 16 A at 250 V, measures 8.2 cm in diameter, is held by spring claws and has a child-safety shutter.
The cover plate, round or square, is sold separately. Fit it with the power switched off at the board, or have an electrician do it. Bakelite is cleaned with a soft cloth; abrasives dull its shine.
