Description
The compost thermometer is a 40 cm stainless steel probe topped with a dial gauge, which you push into the heart of the heap to track its temperature. A heap that heats up is a heap that is working: above 55 °C, decomposition moves fast and most weed seeds are destroyed.
The dial, graduated from -10 °C to +90 °C, is by TFA Dostmann, a German maker of measuring instruments based in Wertheim. The stainless steel stem wipes clean with a cloth and does not rust in damp compost.
Push the stem in halfway, at several points in the heap, and read after a minute. If the temperature drops, turn the compost to aerate it, or water it if it is dry; if it goes above 70 °C, open the heap up and let it cool.
