Cade powder diffuser

This diffuser is for burning cade powder, the juniper of Provence ground to a fine powder that is left to smoulder to scent a room and keep insects away. A dish, and a pierced dome that lets the smoke out through the top.

It is made of burnished stoneware, a clay fired at high temperature, unglazed, dark brown in colour. The dome simply rests on the dish: lift it off to load the powder.

Lay a small trail of powder in the dish, light it, blow gently to put out the flame and let the powder smoulder, then put the dome back. Set it on a surface that can take the heat, and do not leave it unattended.

Cade powder is sold separately, plain or scented. Empty the ashes once they are cold and wipe with a dry cloth.
