Alder wood pestle

Description
This alder mortar pestle is a replacement, or a spare, for a mortar you already own: a wooden, marble or porcelain mortar whose pestle has been lost or broken, or to have a second one when the first smells of garlic.
It is turned from alder, a pale, light and fairly soft wood, and measures 15 cm long by 4 cm in diameter at the head. It is a size for a small mortar: a clove of garlic, coarse salt, seeds, a few herbs.
Alder being soft, it is for crushing rather than hard pounding: for a pesto or an aïoli, turn and press; for very hard seeds, use a stone pestle. Rinse it in hot water, wipe it and let it air-dry. Over time it takes on the smell of garlic; that is why people often keep two.
